Umckaloabo (Pelargonium sidoides) is a very difficult word to pronounce for us but it is also known as the South African geranium. If you haven't heard of this herb, read on!
Umckaloabo has been traditionally used to primarily treat acute respiratory infections. Research has shown that a specific chemical in this herb can significantly reduce the severity and duration of bronchitis symptoms in both adults and children. What does this mean? It means that, when used correctly, this herb can shorten recovery times in those who suffer acute bronchitis. Also, it has been found to be extremely helpful in reducing the duration of the common cold, as well as help relieve symptoms associated with sinusitis and sore throats if used in the beginning of these illnesses. In fact, this herb has been used in a clinical trial for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) alongside standard therapies and it was able to lengthen the time in-between flare ups for those in the trial. Talk about a powerhouse boost to your immune system!!
But, wait... there's more! Not only is this herb an incredible ally for respiratory issues BUT it's also a powerful antimicrobial and antiviral! And not by killing the bacteria or virus but this herb may actually prevent pathogens from attaching themselves to host cells - including coronaviruses.
There are some side effects that could pose a problem which includes some stomach upset and diarrhea as well as it is contraindicated for those who are taking anticoagulants because it has a compound that can slow clotting.
As for its magical benefits, there isn't much about this specific herb, at least as far as I could find. But, considering its healing properties, I would venture to say that one could use this herb in a healing spell/ritual. I did learn that this plant is linked to the planet Saturn as well. Grounding rituals could also benefit from this plant.
Had you ever heard of this herb before? Would love to hear your feedback about it if you want to leave a comment.
