Lemon Balm (aka Melissa officinalis) is a mighty herb used in a lot of relaxing teas and tinctures. This powerhouse herb is in the mint family and is considered a "nervine". What does that mean? It calms you the heck down. But beware, it can bite back as it can lower thyroid levels so be mindful when using it. The leaves have a soft hairy feel to them and exude a wonderful, fresh lemony scent when crushed. This herb has been used since ancient Greek times for easing nervousness, anxiety, etc. The surprise super power? Lemon balm is considered to have antiviral and antioxidant properties as well. It's also wonderful to help with digestion and sleep. Use it in teas, tinctures, or cooking - add it fresh to some iced tea in June instead of lemons and mint because you basically get both packed into this one herb! It's calming and up-lifting! So, if you're looking to add something amazing to your June gardens, think about adding this powerful and hardy perennial.
