There are a few varieties of Cinquefoil,(Potentilla species), which is also known as Five-Finger Grass, is a super potent herb with a high level of tannins as well as quercetin (a flavonoid). It's considered an astringent (drying and tightening). It's also an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. Common species include P. reptans (creeping) and P. erecta (tormentil).

Because of its astringent properties, it makes it a good choice for diarrhea, dysentery, and digestive complaints. It's also a great option to reduce fevers, ease up menstrual cramps, and reduce joint pain. The flavonoid called quercetin makes this a possible herb to use to control overactive MAST cells. Topically, one can use this as a wash, poultice, or lotion to treat skin inflammations, wounds, ulcers, and to help stop bleeding.

Different species can have different duties medicinally:

  • Tormentil (P. erecta): Highly valued for its antimicrobial properties, particularly in treating diarrhea and inflammatory bowel issues.

  • Creeping Cinquefoil (P. reptans): Commonly used for its strong astringent properties on skin and mucous membrane excesses.

  • Silverweed (P. anserina): Traditionally used to treat mouth infections and menstrual pain.

  • Sulphur Cinquefoil (P. recta): Known in traditional Turkish medicine for anti-inflammatory effects.

Many species' roots are edible and apparently taste like turnips.

In witchcraft, use Cinquefoil for protection, warding, prosperity, and love. Use this to enhance spells as well. It's associated with Mercury and Venus and is believed to have been one of the original "flying ointment" used in medieval times to ward off witches, indicating its dual role as both a protective and potent baneful herb.
