Uncaria tomentosa (most popular) or uncaria guianensis are the latin names of this herb we call "Cat's Claw". As you can see from the image on the left, the vine has these tendrils that look like cat's claws if they're not kept trimmed, hence the name. The herb that we use is actually the bark of this vine that's native to South America and will usually be found in shreds like the image on the right. But why are we talking about Cat's Claw?
This herb has very limited studies (like most herbs, because scientists like to isolate the active ingredients in the herbs then test those in the lab so they can recreate them to patent them, lol). But, this herb is known to be helpful for those with osteoarthritis, intestinal issues, immune system support, it has possible antiviral and antioxidant benefits, and is an anti-inflammatory (that's why it helps with osteoarthritis). It has been traditionally used in all of these functions as well as easing muscle aches and reducing fevers. The downsides? If someone has allergies to anything in the Rubiaceae family as this herb could produces some skin rashes. Now, we have to say that there's a warning to not use this herb if you're on medications for blood pressure, blood clotting, and immune suppression but... just remember that there are limited studies and most have been done on only the active ingredient and not the entire herb.
In witchcraft, Cat's Claw (aka "una de gato") is used in protection spells and rituals but also as a balancer of the spirit, so for grounding, centering, etc. It can also be used in prosperity and abundance spells and rituals, as well as a tool to help enhance psychic abilities.
So, if you've never heard of Cat's Claw herb before, now you know!
